Bản tóm lược
Brief for investors
For venture capital, impact investors, private equity and development finance. The investable near-term theses are B2B: domestic textured plant protein and functional microbial ingredients for aquafeed. Deal history is one insect-meal plant. Underwrite capital intensity and rule risk, price against Chinese imports, and plan for trade-sale exits.

The short version. Vietnam has a real supply-side case for alternative protein (it runs a huge animal-protein economy on imported plant protein) but almost no deal history: one insect-meal plant has raised more than USD 5 million. The near-term theses that survive our tests are business-to-business: a domestic textured plant protein ingredient (T1) and functional microbial feed ingredients for shrimp and pangasius (T2). Everything that relies on fermentation at scale is decided by capital cost, not by Vietnam's cheap labour and power, and must be priced against Chinese imports. Exits are trade sales.
What you need to know
- One precedent. Entobel's USD 32.5 million insect-meal plant was financed by Mekong Capital, Dragon Capital and a USD 2.5 million IFC ticket, with Vinh Hoan (a seafood exporter) as anchor buyer. B2B feed product, local private-equity lead, development finance alongside, a named offtake: that is the template (Capital).
- Thin venture market for this sector. Vietnam's venture capital was about USD 509 million in 2025, of which agriculture took about USD 1 million. No technology IPOs in five years; realistic exits are trade sales to strategics or private-equity buyouts (Capital).
- Capital decides fermentation economics. On our indicative stack, capital charges and maintenance are 54 to 67% of the cost of fungal feed protein, which lands at USD 4,050 to 14,700 per tonne of protein against USD 2,625 to 3,846 for fishmeal protein (Economics).
- The competitor is Chinese by-product protein. Bacterial biomass from Chinese amino-acid fermentation is already sold into Vietnamese feed; Chinese yeast-protein and mycoprotein plants run at 11,000 to 20,000 t a year (Region).
- Rules: feed is open, food is uncertain. Yeasts, duckweed, algae and insects are listed feed materials; bacterial and fungal biomass need trials; the aquafeed list has a drafting gap. For food, there is no route to positive clearance of a new ingredient, and precision-fermented proteins probably count as GMO products (Rules).
- Watch October to November 2026. The Food Safety Law revision is the event that most changes food-side risk (Outlook).
Theses and how to test them
| Play | Thesis | Diligence question (kill test) |
|---|---|---|
| T1 Domestic textured plant protein | Replace imported Chinese textured soy and gluten for chay and frozen-food makers | Will three named buyers place trial orders at a price that covers cost? Does ex-factory cost beat landed Chinese product (about USD 1.6 per kg before freight and duty)? |
| T2 Functional microbial feed ingredients | Sell survival and feed-efficiency gains at 1 to 5% inclusion to about six shrimp-feed makers and integrated pangasius groups | Do two independent tank or pond trials show a gain at 5% inclusion or less? Is there a written ministry opinion on aquafeed use? |
| T4 Cassava-starch-to-sugar hub | Keep the starch-to-glucose step in Vietnam and co-locate fermentation | Has a fermenter committed? Can sugar be contracted despite cassava volatility? |
| T3 Bulk fishmeal replacement | Only with near-free carbon, tolling or brownfield capex, and sustained high fishmeal prices | Is capex below about USD 6,000 per annual tonne? Will a mill sign at 70 to 90% of fishmeal-protein parity? |
| T7 Precision fermentation (niche) | High-value, low-dose ingredients made under contract abroad | Is the product economic at 1 to 10 g/L titers? Is freedom to operate clear? |

Who else is here
Local private equity (Mekong Capital, Dragon Capital), VinaCapital Ventures, the IFC, ADB Ventures (no Vietnamese agrifood deal yet), regional seed specialists (Better Bite Ventures, Big Idea Ventures, ProVeg Incubator), and new state venture funds in Ho Chi Minh City (VND 500 billion) and Hanoi (VND 230 billion). Strategic acquirers by fit include feed, dairy, seafood and amino-acid groups (Capital, M. Capital, E. Directory).
What would make this more investable
- A new-food procedure with timelines in the Food Safety Law and its decree (Policy options, options 1 and 5).
- Aquafeed and livestock feed-list fixes (options 3 and 4).
- Tolling access to existing fermentation tanks or a shared pilot line (T5).
- A development-finance first-loss tranche for a first fermentation-feed plant.

Looking to 2050 (edition 1.1)
- Price two external questions: whether imported feed protein comes under chronic stress, and whether Asia's fermentation market stays open or falls under Chinese price dominance. Plays T2, T4, T5, T6 and T9 hold in all four 2050 worlds and thrive in two; T3 (bulk fishmeal replacement) and T7 (high-value precision fermentation) are bets that should scale only when their signposts trip (Scenarios 2050).
- Cost curves are engineering estimates, not observed trends. Fermentation industries have cut costs 13 to 20% per doubling of output. Price feed-protein deals against fishmeal: on our estimates soybean-meal parity is out of reach to 2050 (Frontier technology).
- Cheaper capital is a first-order lever. Cutting the capital charge from 12% to 9% does as much for fungal feed protein as the cost learning expected by 2030 (our calculation). Concessional debt and guarantees matter more than grants (Robust moves).
- Mind the scale. Our alternative-protein scenario implies microbial feed-protein capacity of about nine times Entobel's current Vietnamese capacity (11 kt a year) by 2030 and about 78 times by 2050; no country has yet reached 1% novel protein in national feed (Protein balance 2050).
- Timing. Second-hand fermentation tanks are a 2027 to 2030 window; protein from renewable power is a 2040s option on the Mekong shrimp coast, and only if five conditions align.
Bối cảnh và nguồn
Cutting the annual capital charge from 12% to 9% lowers the 2030 low-end cost of fungal feed protein to about USD 3,610 per t of protein with no learning at all, close to the central learning case in 2030 (USD 3,557 after two doublings of output). Bối cảnh và nguồn
S-ALT implies about 0.86 Mt of dry microbial feed product in 2050: about 78 times the combined design capacity of Entobel's two Vietnamese insect-meal plants (11 kt a year), or 43 plants of Calysseo's 20 kt size; about 9 times by 2030. Plus 0.29 Mt of food protein ingredient. Our arithmetic. 9,10
